With temperatures soaring in the national capital, student safety has become a key concern for authorities. Schools are now rolling out urgent measures to minimise heat-related risks and keep children protected during peak summer days.
Amid rising temperatures and an increasing risk of heatwave conditions, the Delhi government has issued a fresh set of guidelines for schools to safeguard students’ health.
All government, aided and private recognised schools have been directed to implement precautionary measures aimed at preventing dehydration and heat-related illnesses among children.
WHAT IS THE WATER BELL SYSTEM AND WHY HAS IT BEEN INTRODUCED?
Under the new measures, schools must ring a bell every 45 to 60 minutes to remind students to drink water. This “water bell” system is designed to ensure regular hydration during extreme heat.
In addition, a “buddy system” has been introduced, where students will be paired up to keep an eye on each other’s well-being and quickly report any signs of discomfort or illness.
WHAT RESTRICTIONS ARE IN PLACE FOR ASSEMBLIES AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES?
Morning assemblies have either been cancelled or must be conducted in shaded or indoor spaces for a shorter duration. Schools have also been instructed to avoid open-air classes and suspend outdoor physical activities during peak heat hours.
Authorities have emphasised the need to provide safe and cool drinking water at multiple accessible points within school premises.
WHAT ARE THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS?
Teachers have been asked to regularly share weather updates and advisories with parents. Schools will also conduct awareness sessions to educate students about heatwave risks and preventive steps.
Parents have been advised to send children in light, breathable cotton clothing and ensure proper personal hygiene, including daily bathing.
Additionally, each school will appoint a nodal teacher to monitor the implementation of these measures. Schools are also required to display heatwave precautionary materials prominently and ensure immediate first aid and medical assistance if needed. An action taken report must be submitted to the education department within the stipulated timeline.
