The WhatsApp subscription plan has been in the headlines for some time, and a new report now suggests it is finally rolling out. The feature, called WhatsApp Plus, is currently available to a limited number of users who have installed the latest Android update via the Google Play Store, while for iOS users, the company plans to make it available in the coming days.
According to WABetaInfo, this subscription plan is completely optional, and the core WhatsApp features — Messaging, voice calls, end-to-end encryption and more — will remain free. So, if you don’t subscribe, nothing changes for you. The screenshot shared in the report shows the cost of the subscription plan, which is a monthly price of €2.49 (around Rs 274). The price may vary from region to region.
With this move, Meta is apparently experimenting with subscription revenue beyond ads, similar to other apps. Basic use is free, while payment is required for extra features. After trying similar ideas on Instagram, it’s now testing whether users will pay for personalisation and a small convenience upgrade for WhatsApp.
What we can expect from WhatsApp Plus
The optional subscription plan is expected to bring a range of new features, including access to exclusive sticker packs that users can download directly from the sticker store. Some of these stickers also come with animated effects for a more interactive experience.
Subscribers will also be able to personalise the app with 18 new theme colours, including Vibrant Blue, Royal Purple, Deep Navy, Bright Lavender, Charcoal Grey, Coral Orange, Forest Green, Teal, Burgundy, and Earl Brown, along with options like Sandy Beige, Emerald Green, Bright Yellow, Olive Green, Fuchsia Pink, Crimson Red, Sunset Orange, and Golden Yellow. Once selected, the chosen accent colour is applied consistently across the entire app interface, giving WhatsApp a refreshed look.
In the premium plan, users can also customise the WhatsApp app icon, with a choice of 14 designs ranging from classic styles to more creative options like glitter finishes, electric blue effects, and cosmic themes. The lineup also includes textured looks, soft pastel icons, and minimal outlined designs in light green or black and white.
WhatsApp Plus users can pin up to 20 chats, up from the general 3 chats to pin. This can make it easier to keep important conversations at the top without scrolling.
While WhatsApp already allows custom ringtones, it adds 10 exclusive options for premium users, giving them more ways to personalise their calling experience with distinct sounds.
