Daniel Radcliffe says Dominic McLaughlin will be a better Harry Potter than him

Actor Daniel Radcliffe, known for his portrayal of Harry Potter in the original film series, has expressed strong support for Dominic McLaughlin. The latter is set to reprise the role in HBO’s forthcoming series.

The announcement of the new adaptation has sparked debate among fans, with some welcoming another rendition of J.K. Rowling’s novels. Others have questioned the need for another version after less than 15 years since the film franchise concluded.

Daniel Radcliffe praises Dominic McLaughlin

In an interview with Screenrant, Radcliffe was asked about the upcoming series, which HBO plans to develop across eight seasons. He responded by praising 11-year-old Dominic McLaughlin, the new lead. He also voiced his belief in the young actor’s potential.

The 36-year-old said, “I’m sure Dominic is going to be better than me. I learned as I went. I look back on what I did now with a lot more kindness. I find it less embarrassing now that I’m older. But I was very much learning how to do it for a long time on Potter.”

The actor went further to say that he believes the new lead will surpass his own performance in the iconic role.

The actor on casting discussions

Despite the scrutiny, Radcliffe encouraged the public to allow the new actors to establish their own interpretations of the characters. He also addressed concerns about young actors entering the spotlight and suggested that genuine support means giving them space rather than focusing on previous stars.

He said, “When these kids got cast, there’s a whole thing around the internet, around the world, people being like, ‘We’ve got to look after these kids.’If you mean that, if everyone really means what they are saying, then one of the things you can do for me is not ask about me and Rupert (Grint) all the time.”

Harry Potter film franchise legacy

The original Harry Potter film series, starring Radcliffe, Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger, was adapted from J.K. Rowling’s popular seven-book series. The films premiered in 2001 with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and concluded in 2011 with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.

The books follow the journey of Harry Potter, who discovers he is a wizard at age 11 and attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He then faces challenges from the dark wizard Voldemort. The film franchise enjoyed global popularity and led to the creation of a spinoff series, Fantastic Beasts.

HBO series release plans

The new HBO Harry Potter series is scheduled to premiere in 2027, with subsequent seasons planned to be released yearly until 2034.
