HCLTech CEO: AI Reshapes IT Jobs, Demands Massive Reskilling

HCLTech CEO on AI’s Dual Impact: Jobs & Revenue

HCLTech CEO C Vijayakumar has stated that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is fundamentally transforming both the revenue models of the tech industry and the very nature of tech jobs. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, he outlined this dual impact, highlighting the urgent need for large-scale reskilling.

Key Takeaways

  • AI is reshaping IT industry revenue streams and job roles simultaneously.
  • Job displacement is inevitable, making massive reskilling the top challenge.
  • The Indian IT sector’s talent demand is shifting from traditional development to AI, cloud, and cybersecurity.
  • New revenue is flowing from AI-led transformation projects as clients seek efficiency.
  • Global frameworks for responsible and ethical AI adoption are critical.

The Reskilling Imperative

Vijayakumar explained that while AI boosts productivity and creates new opportunities, it will displace many traditional roles. He identified reskilling as the primary solution to this disruption.

“There will be a lot of displacement. So, the only way to address that is massive reskilling. And I think that’s the biggest challenge for the industry and for the country,” the HCLTech CEO added.

Shift in Indian IT Talent Demand

The CEO noted a significant shift in the Indian IT services industry, a major employment generator. Companies are now investing heavily in AI and automation, changing the core skills required.

“Earlier, the industry was about application development and maintenance. Now, it’s about AI, cloud, and cybersecurity. The talent needs are different,” he said.

New AI-Driven Revenue Models

On the business side, Vijayakumar stated that AI is unlocking new revenue streams. He pointed to strong demand for comprehensive AI-led transformation projects from clients aiming to integrate the technology into their core operations for efficiency and innovation.

Call for Responsible AI Frameworks

Vijayakumar emphasised the importance of responsible AI, advocating for global ethical and safety frameworks. He confirmed this is a key topic of discussion at global forums like the WEF.

“As we adopt AI at scale, we need to have the right guardrails in place. This is a discussion that is happening globally at forums like the WEF,” Vijayakumar said.
