Meet Avataar: India’s first amphibious drone that can fly, dive and spy

India has officially entered the era of multi-domain robotics with the introduction of Avataar. Developed by the Bengaluru-based deep-tech startup AquaAirX Autonomous Systems, this machine is being hailed as the first amphibious drone of the country.

The vehicle is making headlines following its official launch on March 5, 2026, and its recent success in securing Rs 12.5 crore in seed funding led by Rainmatter, the investment arm of Zerodha.

Unlike traditional drones that are restricted to the skies, Avataar is a surveillance-class vehicle engineered to operate with equal efficiency both in the air and deep underwater. This seamless transition between domains represents a massive leap for Indian defence and research technology.

Simply put, it is a smart robot that can fly like a plane and dive like a submarine to keep an eye on everything.

Gouthami TS, Founder and CEO of AquaAirX, told indiatoday.in that building such a machine requires a three-layer defence against the sea. She explained that the drone uses a carbon fibre body that saltwater cannot rust, paired with specialised coatings that repel salt and gunk from the sensors.

“A mandatory freshwater flush after every sortie handles the rest,” she added, explaining that the drone is given a fresh water bath after every mission to wash away corrosive salt.

WHAT HAS AVATAAR ACHIEVED SO FAR?

The developers have confirmed that Avataar has successfully achieved Technology Readiness Level 6, often called TRL 6. In the world of science and engineering, this means the drone is no longer just a laboratory concept.

It has a fully functional prototype that has been tested in relevant operational environments, such as actual water bodies rather than just controlled tanks.

Achieving TRL 6 is a major hurdle because it proves the technology can handle real-world stresses, including water pressure and varying currents. It signals that the drone is now ready for high-fidelity trials and is approaching the final stages before full-scale production.

WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT THE AVATAAR AMPHIBIOUS DRONE?

At its core, Avataar is a next-generation Autonomous Tactical Aerial and Aquatic Reconnaissance vehicle. This means it can operate in air as well as water without direct human control.

It is designed to handle missions that were previously thought impossible for a single unit. By combining the agility of a quadcopter, which is an unmanned helicopter with four rotors, with the pressure-resistant build of a submarine, it offers real-time situational awareness across air and sea.

For the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, this means a single tool can now track a vessel from the clouds and then dive beneath the waves to inspect its hull or search for underwater threats.

To ensure it never fails during these risky moves, the CEO noted that the drone is programmed with a safety rule: it will never try to dive if the battery is too low.

HOW DOES AVATAAR WORK UNDERWATER?

To navigate the murky depths, Avataar uses a collection of smart tools. Since cameras cannot see well in dark or muddy water, the drone uses a method similar to how bats find their way in the dark.

It sends out sound pulses that bounce off objects and return to the drone. By timing these echoes, the drone creates a 3D map of its surroundings.

To ensure it does not drift away with ocean currents, it uses a high-tech speedometer that tracks its movement against the sea floor. This helps the drone know exactly how fast it is going and its precise location.

Communication is handled through sound pulses rather than wires. The drone uses a system that works like underwater Wi-Fi, turning data into sound to talk to the surface.

To find its way home, it uses a smart timing system that calculates its distance and direction from the base station. These technologies ensure that the drone does not just float but actually performs complex tasks on its own.

WHY IS THIS DRONE IMPORTANT FOR NATIONAL SECURITY?

The applications for such a vehicle are vast. It is built for persistent surveillance of harbours and ports, where it can detect threats both above and below the waterline.

Beyond security, it serves critical roles in offshore energy by inspecting subsea pipelines and cables. In emergencies, its rapid response capability makes it an ideal candidate for search and rescue operations in complex marine environments.

Because it can loiter for long periods, it acts as a constant eye on the horizon, ensuring that 100 per cent of a target area is monitored without any blind spots.
