What was meant to be a routine setup for a major global concert turned tragic in Brazil, casting a shadow over international pop star Shakira’s upcoming show. The incident occurred on Sunday, April 26, during preparations, when a crew member working on stage structures died following a serious on-site accident. Event organisers confirmed the development in a statement shared on Instagram.
In the statement, translated from Portuguese, organisers of the Todo Mundo no Rio concert said, “The event organisers confirm that an accident this Sunday afternoon (April 26th) tragically claimed the life of a professional who was working on assembling the structures for the show.”
The statement continued: “First responders provided initial care at the scene, and the Fire Department was immediately called to transport the patient. Unfortunately, the professional passed away at the hospital.”
“At this time, we are providing all support, comfort, and solidarity to the responsible company, its team, and the victim’s family,” it concluded.
The state fire brigade (CBMERJ) also confirmed the incident to People, saying that the worker suffered severe crushing injuries to his lower limbs. According to officials, fellow workers removed him from the equipment before emergency teams arrived.
Rescue personnel from the 3rd Maritime Group ambulance service initiated pre-hospital care at the site before transferring him to the Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he was declared dead.
Shakira’s India tour put on hold
The pop singer’s India tour has been postponed. She was set to perform at Mumbai’s Mahalaxmi Race Course on April 10, followed by a show at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on April 15. Organisers cited “geopolitical developments and regional tensions” as the reason for the delay.
