Rare lunar eclipse turns the Moon bloody over India

On Tuesday, March 3, 2026, skies above India and much of the world are set to dazzle with a total lunar eclipse that will turn the Moon a deep blood-red hue, a visual spectacle that has drawn strong interest from astronomers and skywatchers alike.

Known popularly as a “Blood Moon,” this celestial event occurs when the Earth moves directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow fully over the lunar surface.

The only sunlight that reaches the Moon has been filtered through the Earth’s atmosphere, which scatters shorter wavelengths and allows red and orange tones to illuminate the Moon’s face.

This total eclipse, the first of the year, coincides with the Indian festival of Holi, adding cultural and astronomical significance to the night.

In Hindu tradition, eclipses like this, called Chandra Grahan, are considered spiritually important, and many people observe special Sutak (inauspicious period) timings or adjust celebrations around them.

According to experts and astronomical data compiled ahead of the event, totality, the period when the Moon is entirely within Earth’s shadow, will last nearly an hour and may be visible for varying durations across India.

Northeastern states and islands such as Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands are expected to view most of the eclipse directly, while many other regions will see the Moon already reddened as it rises above the horizon.

WHY MARCH 3 LUNAR ECLIPSE IS SO RARE?

What makes this eclipse particularly noteworthy for India is its timing and rarity.

While lunar eclipses happen roughly two to four times a year somewhere on Earth, total lunar eclipses that align with evening viewing hours and major cultural dates like Holi are much less common, meaning large parts of the country will observe the peak phases at a convenient sunset time.

It’s also one of the few total eclipses in the next cycle where the Earth’s shadow will be deep enough to produce a vivid red colour across the Moon’s surface.

For skywatchers, this presents a prime opportunity for observation without special eye protection. Enthusiasts are advised to look toward the eastern horizon just after sunset on Tuesday to catch the Moon as it darkens and shifts into striking shades of red and copper.

With clear skies, binoculars or a small telescope will enhance the view, but the transition from full Moon to Blood Moon is visible with the naked eye.

Astronomers stress that while this dramatic shift in lunar colour is visually arresting, it’s perfectly safe to observe, and offers a unique chance to witness the dynamic interplay of Earth’s shadow and atmospheric light on our closest celestial neighbour.
