Assam Gets First Tech University Focused on AI, Cybersecurity and Quantum Computing

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has laid the foundation stone for Assam’s first Technology and Vocational Education and Training University in Gohpur. Tribute to a Freedom Fighter

The university honors Swahid Kanaklata Barua, a young freedom fighter from Gohpur who sacrificed her life at age 17 while protecting the national flag. “A university in her name is a fitting tribute to her supreme sacrifice,” Sitharaman stated during the ceremony.

Educational Transformation in Northeast

The central government has invested approximately Rs 21,000 crore in the Northeast’s education sector since 2014. Significant achievements include:

Enhanced Connectivity

Minister Sitharaman highlighted improved regional infrastructure with 10 new greenfield airports constructed in the last 11 years. She noted historic milestones where “the first goods trains reached Manipur in 2022 and Meghalaya in 2023.”

Vision for Self-Reliant India

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the project as a landmark in the state’s education sector. “This university will provide a platform for young minds to gain technical expertise and contribute towards building an Atmanirbhar Bharat,” he stated. The campus is planned to accommodate approximately 10,000 students.
