OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Atlas Browser to Challenge Google Chrome

OpenAI Launches Atlas Browser to Challenge Google Chrome

OpenAI has unveiled Atlas, a revolutionary AI-powered web browser that directly competes with Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. The ChatGPT-backed browser represents OpenAI’s boldest move yet to transform from a chatbot service into a comprehensive computing platform.

Key Features of ChatGPT Atlas

  • Chat Integration: ChatGPT built directly into browsing with “Ask ChatGPT” sidebar
  • Memory Function: Recalls previous chats and browsing sessions for continuity
  • Agent Mode: Performs online actions like form filling and research automatically

Announced on Tuesday, Atlas integrates ChatGPT throughout the browsing experience, enabling users to interact with the AI while navigating websites. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called it “a rare once-a-decade opportunity to rethink what a browser can be.”

How Atlas Browser Works

Instead of traditional search engines like Google or Bing, Atlas handles searches through ChatGPT. Users can access context-aware assistance for drafting emails, researching topics, or summarizing articles directly from any webpage.

The Memory feature allows ChatGPT to recall information from previous interactions, while incognito mode disables data collection. OpenAI confirmed browsing content won’t be used for model training without explicit user consent.

Agent Mode Capabilities and Safety

Agent mode enables ChatGPT to perform online actions on the user’s behalf, including form completion, research organization, and online purchases. Users maintain control with “take control” and red “stop” buttons to monitor or halt actions.

Security safeguards prevent the agent from executing code, installing extensions, or accessing local files. The system automatically pauses on sensitive websites like banking portals, with ongoing security testing to address potential risks.

Availability and Rollout

Atlas launches worldwide for macOS users starting Tuesday. Agent mode will be available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers initially, while free-tier users get standard browsing features.

Windows, iOS, and Android versions are in development. Users who set Atlas as their default browser receive temporary increased ChatGPT data limits for seven days.

The launch follows OpenAI’s recent expansion to third-party developers and in-chat purchasing tests with partners like Etsy, Shopify, and Walmart.

“A step toward a world where most web use happens through agentic systems where you can delegate the routine and stay focused on what matters most.” – Sam Altman, OpenAI CEO
