Sam Altman Clarifies ChatGPT Adult Mode: ‘We Are Not Moral Police’

Key Takeaways

  • OpenAI CEO Sam Altman clarified that ChatGPT’s upcoming ‘adult mode’ will not loosen mental health protections.
  • The company will maintain strict safeguards for minors while allowing more freedom for verified adults.
  • Erotica content was cited as just one example of expanded user freedom, not the primary focus.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has responded to widespread criticism about ChatGPT’s planned ‘adult mode,’ clarifying that the company is not acting as “moral police” while emphasizing continued protection for minors.

Altman’s clarification came just one day after his initial announcement about allowing adult content, including erotica, for verified users sparked significant backlash.

“We are not the elected moral police of the world”

Addressing the controversy, Altman stated: “We are not the elected moral police of the world.” He explained that the decision to introduce adult mode prioritizes teenager safety over user freedom.

In an X post, Altman wrote: “This tweet about upcoming changes to ChatGPT blew up on the erotica point much more than I thought it was going to! It was meant to be just one example of us allowing more user freedom for adults.”

He further clarified: “We are not loosening any policies related to mental health. This is a new and powerful technology, and we believe minors need significant protection. We also care very much about the principle of treating adult users like adults.”

Differential restrictions and mental health considerations

Altman reiterated that adult AI policies will feature varying restrictions across different user groups. OpenAI will apply different approaches for users with mental health concerns.

The company aims to help users achieve long-term goals without being paternalistic, according to Altman’s statements.

Evolution from “pretty restrictive” beginnings

Altman previously described ChatGPT’s initial restrictions as “pretty restrictive” – measures implemented to protect users from mental health risks. While this approach safeguarded vulnerable users, it reduced the chatbot’s utility and enjoyment for those without mental health concerns.

OpenAI has since developed new tools to “mitigate the serious mental health issues,” enabling the company to “safely relax the restrictions in most cases.”

Announcing the upcoming changes, Altman said: “In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our ‘treat adult users like adults’ principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.”
