India shows a strong presence in the THE World University Rankings 2026, with a growing number of both public and private institutions included in the global list. With 128 universities ranked, India leads all countries in representation, followed by Japan (115) and Turkey (109). Notably, Yemen has also entered the rankings for the first time this year.
Despite this large participation, no Indian university features in the top 10 or top 40, highlighting a gap between scale and top-tier global performance.
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru, ranked 43rd in computer science in Asia, remains the country’s highest-performing institution. Most other Indian universities are placed in mid-range positions, indicating steady visibility but limited breakthrough at the global elite level.
Meanwhile, China continues to dominate the Asia rankings with multiple universities in the top 10, reinforcing its strong academic leadership in the region.
Overall, India’s wide representation reflects growing reach in global higher education, but stronger performance is still required to compete at the highest international tiers.
