From the popular messaging App, WhatsApp is apparently expanding its role in daily digital life. The Meta-owned messaging platform has introduced a new feature in India that allows users to recharge prepaid mobile numbers directly within the app. This means users may no longer choose to open other payment apps like Paytm or Google Pay; instead, they can make payments directly through WhatsApp.
The feature is powered by PayU. The company claimed it is rolling out in phases across Android and iOS and will reach all users in the coming weeks.
How to recharge using WhatsApp
WhatsApp added a dedicated rupee icon on the home screen. For recharge, just tap on the icon to get started. From there, select the mobile prepaid recharge option and choose the number you want to recharge — this could be your own or someone else’s. Next, confirm your operator and pick a suitable plan. Once that’s done, select your preferred payment method, such as UPI, debit card, or credit card, and complete the payment.
Notably, apart from doing a recharge, this icon provides quick access to UPI payments, metro ticketing services, and other features available within the app. Users can also initiate payments directly from chat windows.
In the bigger picture, WhatsApp seems to be trying to become more than just a messaging app. It already supports payments, bill payments, and even metro ticket bookings in some cities. Now, with mobile recharges added, it’s moving closer to becoming an “all-in-one” app for everyday tasks.
At the same time, WhatsApp is also exploring new ways to expand its offerings beyond core messaging. Reports suggest the platform is testing an optional subscription plan, tentatively called WhatsApp Plus, which could introduce a range of personalisation features. These may include exclusive sticker packs, additional theme colours, and custom app icons, along with the ability to pin more chats (up to 20) for easier access. The subscription is expected to remain optional, meaning regular users will still be able to access core features for free, while those who opt in can unlock added convenience and customisation tools.
