Who is new Apple CEO John Ternus? 25 years in one place and blank LinkedIn profile, he is insider

Apple has announced its biggest leadership change in almost 15 years. CEO Tim Cook will step down from his role later this year, with hardware engineering chief John Ternus taking the helm of the company. In a letter addressed to the Apple community, Cook called John Ternus the “best person” for the job.

Ternus has been touted as Tim Cook’s successor for some time now, with rumours suggesting a leadership change within Apple since late last year. But who is John Ternus? And what does this transition mean for Apple?

Point 1: Who is John Ternus?

John Ternus is a senior vice president of hardware engineering at Apple. He joined Apple in 2001, having spent the last 25 years at the company. John is known to have played a key behind-the-scenes role in developing Apple’s flagship products, including Macs, iPads and AirPods.

According to Ternus’ LinkedIn profile, he is about to complete 25 years of Apple soon. There are also no posts visible on his profile. A screenshot floating on Reddit shows that John Ternus did not even have a profile picture on LinkedIn. Though a profile picture is visible at the time of writing.

John Ternus

John Ternus’ LinkedIn profile likely did not have a profile picture till a few hours ago.

As per Bloomberg, John oversees development of devices that generate roughly 80 per cent of Apple’s revenue.

At 50, Ternus is younger than most senior executives at Apple. This could mean that he may stay as CEO for a long term, similar to Tim Cook, who was of the same age when he stepped up to the role in 2011.

Ternus is widely credited for helping revive Mac sales, and bringing premium ‘Pro’ models in Apple’s product portfolio. His role was also crucial in allowing Apple to run its own silicon on Macs (M-series chips), which have revolutionised the PC industry.

Point 2: The signs were there

For months, rumours were making the rounds that Tim Cook may be planning to retire as Apple CEO. It was becoming increasingly clear that John Ternus may be the one destined to succeed Cook. As per media reports, Ternus had also begun accompanying executives on international tours and meeting Apple staff at various offices.
He was also getting more public appearances such as introducing the iPhone Air during the iPhone 17 series launch.

The MacBook Neo, another device developed under Ternus, was also showcased by him to the media during a special event earlier this year. Usually, such an activity would’ve been reserved for Tim Cook, signalling the confidence the company may have regarding his potential for the future.

Point 3: Apple may be going back to hardware

John Ternus’ appointment as the new Apple CEO is widely seen as the company;s switch back to a leader who has a background in hardware. While Tim Cook’s leadership saw big growth for the company, critics argued that his business background may have hampered innovation within the company, when compared to the time under Steve Jobs’ leadership.

Reports also suggest that insiders within Apple believe that Tim Cook didn’t participate enough in the product development process. With John Ternus, this will likely change, potentially bringing it back to the involvement levels Steve Job had back in the day.

Ternus’ team has worked diligently in shaping Apple’s latest products, including the new design for the iPhone 17 Pro models, and the ultra-slim iPhone Air. Apple is rumoured to launch a foldable iPhone later this year, which is tipped to be the most drastic change to the iPhone since Steve Jobs launched the original iPhone in 2007.

Point 4: Tim Cook isn’t going anywhere

Tim Cook succeeded Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in 2011 as the CEO. In the past 15 years, Cook’s leadership saw a massive rise in the company’s sales, and market cap. When he was appointed as CEO, Apple had a market valuation of $350 billion. Today, the company is valued at over $4 trillion.

Tim also pushed for services such as Apple Music and Apple TV Plus, which have become very profitable for the company.

It may seem that Tim Cook will no longer be involved in Apple’s operations. However, that is not entirely the case. Cook will transition to the role of executive chairman on Apple’s board on September 1, 2026. This will allow Tim to continue having influence on the company’s long-term strategies.

Previously, Cook had said that he could not “imagine life without Apple.”

Point 5: Apple kickstarts new era after 50th anniversary

This leadership change comes just days after Apple celebrated its 50th anniversary. The timing is unlikely to be a coincidence. Apple could’ve planned this transition to allow John Ternus to take the company into a new era as it completes 50 years.

It is believed that John Ternus could kickstart this era with a focus on next-generation technologies including AI-powered wearables such as smartglasses. Apple is also expected to unveil a new Siri, powered by Google Gemini in June this year.

Do note that Ternus had laughed off the idea that Apple was behind in the generative AI race back in 2023. Since then, the company has struggled to deliver features with Apple Intelligence on its own, and now will be using Google’s Gemini models.
