IPhone 17e vs iPhone 16e: What’s new and what’s changed

Apple’s new iPhone 17e keeps a similar price tag to last year’s iPhone 16e, but comes with a longer list of features—most notably MagSafe, a faster chip, and double the base storage. If you’re weighing an upgrade or just curious what changed, here’s a clean breakdown.

iPhone 17e vs iPhone 16e: Design

Both phones share the same 6. 1-inch aluminium-frame design with IP68 water resistance and Face ID. The iPhone 17e adds a soft pink colour option to the existing black and white. Otherwise, you’re looking at the same overall form factor—same notch, same dimensions, no Dynamic Island.

iPhone 17e vs iPhone 16e: Display

The screens are identical on paper—6. 1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED, 460ppi, 60Hz. Neither phone gets ProMotion. The difference is what’s protecting the display: the 17e gets Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says offers 3x better scratch resistance than the Ceramic Shield on the 16e, along with a new anti-reflective coating to cut down on glare. Speaker setup remains unchanged on both.

iPhone 17e vs iPhone 16e: Hardware

The iPhone 17e moves from the A18 to the A19 chip—same 3nm architecture, but with a 4-core GPU (the standard iPhone 17 has a 5-core). Apple claims up to 2x faster CPU performance compared to the iPhone 11. The modem is also new—the C1X replaces the C1 from the 16e, and Apple says it’s up to 2x faster while using 30% less energy than the modem in the iPhone 16 Pro. The 17e also picks up Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, stepping up from Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5. 3 on the 16e.

iPhone 17e vs iPhone 16e: Battery and charging

Battery life is rated at 26 hours of video playback on the 17e, up from 22 hours on the 16e. Fast charging via USB-C gets you to 50% in about 30 minutes with a 20W adapter. MagSafe wireless charging now hits 15W, compared to just 7. 5W Qi on the 16e.

iPhone 17e vs iPhone 16e: AI features

Both phones support Apple Intelligence and run iOS 26. The 17e benefits from the A19’s faster Neural Engine for on-device AI tasks, though the practical difference day-to-day will be minimal. New iOS 26 features like Call Screening, Hold Assist, Live Translation in calls, and Visual Intelligence on-screen are available on both—these are software-level additions tied to the OS, not exclusive to the 17e.

iPhone 17e vs iPhone 16e: Camera

The rear camera is a 48MP Fusion lens on both phones. The 17e brings an upgraded image pipeline that improves Portrait mode—it now automatically recognises people, dogs, and cats, saving depth data so you can apply background blur after the shot. HDR rendering of skin tones also gets a generational bump. The front camera stays at 12MP on the 17e; no upgrade to the 18MP Centre Stage camera found on the standard iPhone 17.

iPhone 17e vs iPhone 16e: Price

The iPhone 17e starts at Rs 64,900 for 256GB in India—that’s Rs 5,000 more than what the iPhone 16e launched at, but you’re getting double the base storage. The 512GB variant is priced at Rs 84,900. The iPhone 16e started at Rs 59,900 for 128GB, with a 256GB option at Rs 69,900 and 512GB at Rs 79,900. So the 17e’s base variant is technically better value per gigabyte, even if the entry price is higher.
