Elon Musk says Grok 4.20 public beta is now available: Capabilities of AI chatbot offered by xAI

Elon Musk has announced that his AI company, xAI, has released the first beta of Grok 4. 20 – the next iteration of its chatbot. In typical Musk style, the version number – 4. 20 – is a playful nod to internet culture, but he promises a better performance as compared to the previous version. This include using the AI chatbot for medical opinions.

According to Musk, the new version is designed to be “an order of magnitude smarter and faster” than the standard Grok 4. Grok 4.20 also features a “rapid learning” architecture.

“The Grok 4.2 release candidate (public beta) is now available for use. You need to select it specifically. Critical feedback is appreciated. Unlike prior versions of Grok, 4.2 is able to learn rapidly, so there will be improvements every week with release notes,” he said in a post on X.

Elon Musk pushes Grok 4.20 as new tool for medicine and engineering

While earlier versions of Grok were known for their wit and real-time access to X (formerly Twitter) data, Musk is now positioning Grok 4. 20 as a high-level expert tool. The two major “real-world” capabilities – medical and engineering – have been highlighted in the announcement.

According to Musk, users can now upload files or simply take a photo of their medical data. Musk noted that the model is correctly answering engineering questions.

“You can just take a picture of your medical data or upload the file to get a second opinion from Grok,” Musk said.

“Long way to go, but Grok 4.20 is starting to get open form engineering questions right,” he said in another post.

Grok 4.20 bug fixes coming everyday: Musk

Musk said that Grok 4. 20 is smarter and faster than Grok 4, and that bug fixes are coming every day.

“Grok 4.2 will be about an order of magnitude smarter and faster than Grok 4 when the public beta concludes next month. Still many bug fixes and improvements landing every day. The public beta gives us more critical feedback to address,” Musk announced.

Those who want to access Grok 2.0: Log in to X and open the Grok interface, navigate to the model selection menu, select “Grok 4.20 (Beta)”.
