Rare lunar eclipse to illuminate skies tonight, paint the Moon blood-red

Stargazers across India are in for a celestial treat as a rare total lunar eclipse is set to transform the night sky tonight. This stunning event, often called a Blood Moon, occurs when the Earth slides directly between the Sun and the Moon.

While the Moon does not have its own light, it usually shines by reflecting sunlight. During this deep alignment, our planet blocks that direct path, casting a dark shadow known as the umbra across the lunar surface.

WHY IS A TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE CALLED BLOOD MOON?

A total lunar eclipse happens only during a full Moon when the Sun, Earth, and Moon reach a near perfect alignment.

As the Moon enters the darkest part of the Earth’s shadow, it does not disappear into total darkness. Instead, it takes on a striking, rusty red glow.

This happens because of a phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering. The Earth’s atmosphere filters out shorter blue wavelengths of light and bends the longer red wavelengths toward the Moon.

If you were standing on the lunar surface during this time, you would see every sunrise and sunset on Earth happening all at once in a glowing ring.

Imagine standing on the Moon and looking at Earth, which is perfectly blocking the Sun like a giant, dark ball. Around this dark Earth, you will see a thin, glowing ring of red light because our atmosphere bends the sunlight from every single sunrise and sunset around the planet and focuses it towards you.

The intensity of the red colour depends on the state of the Earth’s atmosphere. If there are high levels of dust, smoke, or water vapour from recent volcanic activity or forest fires, the Moon might appear a deeper, darker crimson.

On clearer nights, it may look more orange or copper. This 72-hour window of lunar activity is particularly special because total eclipses do not happen every month.

WHEN CAN YOU SEE THE LUNAR ECLIPSE IN INDIA?

For viewers in India, the partial phases will begin in the evening, with the totality phase being the most sought after sight.

The eclipse will be visible from various parts of the country, provided the skies remain clear of clouds.

Unlike solar eclipses, you do not need any special filters or protective eyewear to watch this. It is perfectly safe to view with the naked eye, though a pair of binoculars or a small telescope will reveal incredible details of the lunar craters bathed in red light.

HOW TO CAPTURE THE BLOOD MOON ON PHONE?

To photograph this event, use a tripod to keep your camera steady during the long exposure. Turn off the flash and manually adjust the focus to the Moon.

Since the Moon will be dimmer than usual during the peak of the eclipse, increasing the ISO slightly can help capture that elusive glow.
