Top exec Srinivas Narayanan and 2 others leave OpenAI, chatter suggests Board may fire CEO Sam Altman

Not everything is hunky-dory within OpenAI. Last night three senior executives publicly announced that they were leaving the company. The departures mark a significant reshuffle at the top, with three senior executives, Srinivas Narayanan, Kevin Weil and Bill Peebles, announcing their exits. The top executives are leaving as the company trims internal priorities, restructures key teams, and faces mounting investor scrutiny over its leadership and strategic direction.

One of the recent high profile exits is of Srinivas Narayanan. He had been serving as OpenAI’s chief technology officer for B2B applications for three years. “I have decided to leave OpenAI. The last three years have been an incredible journey that felt more like ten,” he wrote in a note on X. “I am so grateful to @sama @gdb @fidjissimo and the rest of the OpenAI leadership for this opportunity of a lifetime. I will cherish this time forever during this historic period for technology and society, and I wish you all the very best for the future.”

Narayanan says that for now he has no plans to join another company and will instead take some time off. Instead, he is coming back to India. “I am looking forward to spending some much-needed time with my aging parents in India before deciding what’s next,” he wrote.

Kevin Weil, meanwhile, was leading OpenAI’s scientific research initiatives. In his post on X Weil announced that he was saying goodbye to OpenAI because his team, OpenAI for Science, was merging into other research groups. Weil, who earlier served as the chief product officer at the company, described his time at OpenAI as “a mind-expanding two years” and said he was “rooting for” the leadership and the broader team as OpenAI continues its push towards artificial general intelligence.

Bill Peebles, who headed OpenAI’s AI video model Sora, also confirmed his departure. In a note shared with colleagues, Peebles reflected on the journey of building Sora “zero-to-one” and recalled early breakthroughs that convinced the team they were “onto something.” “Building Sora zero-to-one with you all has been the honor and adventure of a lifetime,” he wrote.

Peebles is leaving following OpenAI’s decision to shut down Sora last month. “Sora was a project that could not have happened anywhere but OpenAI, and I will always deeply love this place for that,” he wrote in his note.

Reports note that these high-profile exits come because OpenAI is narrowing its focus, cutting back on so-called “side projects” and doubling down on enterprise products. The move is being driven by applications CEO Fidji Simo, who is tasked with steering the company towards profitability ahead of a potential IPO. Simo, however, is reportedly on medical leave for several weeks.

Board talks of firing CEO Sam Altman?

While the exits have set the speculations abuzz in tech circles, questions around leadership at OpenAI are also beginning to surface again. Reports indicate that some OpenAI investors are not fully convinced that Sam Altman is the right person to lead the company into its next phase, especially as it inches closer to going public.

According to a recent report by the Wall Street Journal, investors and board members have concerns that Altman’s wide-ranging external interests could dilute focus at a time when OpenAI is trying to sharpen its business strategy. The board removed Altman once before, and while there is no confirmation of any imminent move, discussions about his long-term role are said to be taking place among company insiders.
