A powerful “bomb cyclone” swirling off the US East Coast is heading toward New York City, and satellite images show a massive, tightly wound storm system with what forecasters describe as a “swirling eye” near New Jersey.
From space, the storm appears almost hurricane-like, a vast spiral of clouds wrapping around a dense center.
Meteorologists say the system has rapidly intensified, a key feature of what is known as a bomb cyclone. This happens when atmospheric pressure drops very quickly in a short period of time, strengthening the storm dramatically.
Current readings show central pressure around 972 millibars, a level typically associated with strong coastal storms. The lower the pressure, the stronger the storm system. Sustained winds have reached 75 miles per hour, with gusts up to 90 miles per hour in some areas.
While technically not a hurricane, forecasters say the system is “functionally a hurricane” in terms of wind strength and structure. The biggest difference is that this storm feeds off temperature contrasts in the atmosphere rather than warm ocean water, which powers tropical hurricanes.
The storm’s position off the coast has already whipped up rough seas and strong winds across parts of New Jersey and the surrounding coastal region. As it moves northward, New York City and nearby areas could see heavy rain, strong wind gusts and possible coastal flooding.
Emergency officials are urging residents to secure loose outdoor items and prepare for potential power outages. High winds could bring down tree branches and power lines, especially in areas with saturated soil.
Air travel and ferry services may also face disruptions, while coastal communities are being warned of dangerous surf conditions and erosion.
Satellite imagery continues to track the storm’s movement in near real-time, showing a tightly wrapped core and thick cloud bands spiralling inland.
The visual intensity of the system has raised concern among meteorologists, who are closely monitoring any further strengthening.
Forecasters expect the storm to gradually weaken as it moves inland and loses access to ocean energy. However, strong winds and heavy rainfall could continue for several hours even after landfall.
