No Rahul Gandhi backing for Stalin: Annamalai hints at DMK-Congress rift

With just a few days to go for the Tamil Nadu polls, BJP leader K Annamalai has sharpened his attack on the DMK-Congress alliance, saying that Rahul Gandhi has neither mentioned MK Stalin’s name nor campaigned for him in the state.

“His only campaign in the state has been to vote out the BJP,” Annamalai told India Today on Monday.

“No leaders of the India bloc have endorsed Stalin as the chief minister over the past few weeks,” he added.

Annamalai also expressed confidence that on April 23, people “will vote for change” and support the BJP.

“Across Tamil Nadu, I am seeing a wave in favour of the NDA,” he told India Today.

Only last week, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) announced that Rahul Gandhi and Stalin will not be campaigning together for the upcoming elections on April 23. Both leaders have separate schedules to adhere to, stated the party.

The Congress party is contesting 28 seats as part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA).

RS Bharathi, the DMK’s organising secretary, clarified that “Rahul Gandhi will campaign in one area, while the chief minister will campaign in another,” reported news agency PTI. He explained that both Stalin, who is also the DMK president, and Rahul Gandhi have pre-existing travel commitments that prevent them from campaigning together.

Bharathi’s comments were in response to a question on Annamalai’s earlier assertion that “Rahul Gandhi wishes for the DMK-led alliance to lose in Tamil Nadu and, therefore, will not come to the state to campaign.”

The DMK leader asserted that with the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approaching, support for the DMK alliance is increasing. He accused the Election Commission of acting as the BJP’s “B Team” across the country.

He mentioned that a complaint had been filed with the Election Commission regarding BJP members who were allegedly collecting personal information, including voter ID numbers, under the pretext of distributing sample cheques worth Rs 10,000.

Bharathi also alleged that members of the AIADMK are distributing pamphlets that resemble vouchers, which promise a payout of Rs 10,000 in accordance with a poll promise.
