India-EU FTA Talks: Piyush Goyal to Visit Brussels for Key Negotiations

India-EU Trade Talks Intensify as Piyush Goyal Heads to Brussels

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will visit Brussels on October 27-28 for high-level discussions with European Union Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič. The talks aim to provide strategic direction to the ongoing India-EU Free Trade Agreement negotiations.

Key Developments

  • Piyush Goyal to meet EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič in Brussels
  • European Parliament Trade Committee delegation visiting New Delhi simultaneously
  • Talks focus on market access, regulatory cooperation, and agricultural sensitivities
  • Target to conclude FTA negotiations by end of 2025

Crucial Stage in FTA Negotiations

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry stated that Goyal’s visit comes at a “crucial stage” in the FTA negotiations. Building on momentum from the 14th round held earlier this month, the minister’s visit aims to provide “strategic direction and political impetus” to the talks.

Discussions will cover key areas including market access, non-tariff measures, and regulatory cooperation. The visit will also review progress achieved so far and identify areas requiring further convergence.

Parallel European Delegation in India

Simultaneously, a seven-member European Parliament Trade Committee delegation will be in New Delhi from October 27-29. The delegation aims to enhance “mutual understanding amid intensive trade negotiations between the EU and India.”

Co-heads of delegation Cristina Maestre and Brando Benifei stated: “The mission is timely taking place just a few months ahead of the deadline to conclude negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement by the end of 2025.”

During their India visit, the European delegation will meet various stakeholders including the Federation of European Business in India and the Confederation of Indian Industry. They will also engage with civil society groups working on sustainability issues and labor rights organizations.
