How O Panneerselvam’s DMK entry could redraw Tamil Nadu’s Dravidian battle lines

In a major political development that has sent shockwaves across Tamil Nadu, O Panneerselvam (OPS), the former Chief Minister and stalwart of AIADMK, has officially joined the DMK, ditching the NDA fold and his long affiliation with Amma’s party. This shift marks one of the most unexpected political realignments in the state’s recent history and reflects deeper undercurrents within Tamil Nadu’s Dravidian political landscape.

OPS, once the successor of the late J Jayalalithaa, was sidelined within AIADMK under the leadership of current leader Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS).

Despite his loyalty and political stature, OPS found little room within the party, consistently marginalised by EPS, who is accused of authoritarian leadership style by OPS.

Multiple attempts to reunify the AIADMK by OPS’ leadership were rebuffed, with no visible help by NDA coalition partners like BJP, leaving OPS politically isolated within the party.

On Friday, OPS visited the DMK headquarters, meeting Chief Minister MK Stalin, signing to join DMK, and formally joining forces with the rival party.

In a candid admission, OPS condemned the AIADMK as being under dictatorial control with no future prospect and expressed confidence in DMK’s prospects in upcoming elections.

OPS’s defection deals a serious blow to AIADMK, particularly in their traditional bastions in Tamil Nadu where he wielded significant influence.

His exit signals internal fractures and disenchantment among party cadres, weakening AIADMK’s electoral base.

The BJP and AIADMK responded sharply, branding OPS a “betrayer” and “political orphan” for switching allegiances despite past associations.

Notably, former AIADMK allies like Sasikala who had floated their own factions, further fragmenting the party.

Meanwhile, TTV Dhinakaran’s reunification attempts within the AIADMK have shown limited success, underscoring the leadership crisis the party faces.

On the other hand, this move strengthens the DMK’s position considerably.

OPS brings with him not only political experience but also a dedicated vote bank from regions loyal to him.

His entry is seen as a major win by Stalin’s DMK ahead of elections, solidifying their coalition and expanding their influence.

Interestingly, this upheaval is being read by many political analysts as a situation where both Stalin and EPS have emerged as winners in different ways.

For Stalin and DMK, absorbing a leader of OPS’s stature enhances their political standing and promises an extended outreach in AIADMK-held constituencies. OPS’s move lends credibility to the DMK’s growing dominance and unity.

Conversely, within AIADMK, EPS consolidates his undisputed control after pushing OPS out.

With OPS gone, EPS now stands as the sole unchallenged leader of the party, able to pursue a more streamlined leadership approach without internal dissent.

While AIADMK is weakened electorally, EPS’s firm grip ensures the party’s organizational coherence.

The BJP, despite being a prominent member of the NDA in Tamil Nadu, failed to mediate effectively between EPS and OPS to keep the AIADMK unified.

Multiple overtures from BJP leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah, to reconcile OPS into AIADMK have been reportedly thwarted by EPS’s firm opposition.

This inability weakened BJP’s influence in Tamilnadu, where it remains a marginal player dependent on AIADMK’s fortunes. BJP’s failure to bring back OPS may have inadvertently facilitated his move to DMK, reinforcing DMK’s position and widening the vacuum in NDA’s Tamil Nadu politics.

OPS’s joining of DMK represents a historic realignment that underscores the fluidity and unpredictability of Tamil Nadu politics.

While it imposes a temporary setback for AIADMK and BJP, it simultaneously boosts Stalin’s DMK and consolidates his leadership.

Simultaneously, EPS’ unchallenged position within AIADMK underscores a decisive, if smaller, consolidation of power.

As Tamil Nadu approaches its next electoral cycle, the political battlefield has been reshaped dramatically with unexpected alliances and new power dynamics shaping the future of Dravidian politics.

The coming months will reveal how voters respond to these seismic shifts and whether OPS’s gamble will translate into electoral success.
