New Jersey Devils Defenseman Dougie Hamilton Could Be Available Before March 6 Deadline

Things remain far from ideal for the New Jersey Devils. With the trade deadline just three days away, the franchise still has cap space that needs to be cleared. With that in mind, General Manager Tom Fitzgerald might be forced to put some names on the chopping block.

Veteran D-man Dougie Hamilton remains on top of that list. With a $9 million cap hit through the 2027-28 season, he remains one of the bigger Devils contracts. His no-movement clause softened to a 10-team trade list beginning this season, opening the door for a potential deal if the Devils find the right trade partner.

New Jersey Devils can make a trade despite doing well

The 32-year-old defenseman rediscovered his offensive touch during January. Hamilton recorded 13 points across 14 games during the month, reminding teams why he has been one of the league’s most productive blueliners throughout his career.

While fans and critics alike have criticized his form on ice, his performance remains intact as he continues to remain a big part of the Devils’ back line. Not to mention, his ability to generate offense on a regular basis has been integral to New Jersey’s playoff push.

For teams looking to increase their defense, he remains a top choice. Additionally, with their current cap space conditions, the move to move Hamilton is more about managing their finances rather than the defenseman’s performance.

New Jersey wants the cap relief to address other roster needs as it positions itself for sustained playoff success. Several factors complicate a potential Hamilton deal. His hefty annual average value makes finding a trade partner difficult without salary retention or creative cap maneuvering.

The playoff salary cap rules and the crackdown on double-salary retention have made it more challenging to move expensive contracts this season. Teams can no longer use the same retention strategies that facilitated blockbuster deadline deals in previous years.

Hamilton’s camp has expressed willingness to expand his 10-team trade list to facilitate a move. That cooperation increases the likelihood of finding a suitable destination before the March 6 deadline. With him willing to be traded and the Devils desperate for cap relief, the trade remains likely to happen.

But while both parties remain open for a trade, Hamilton’s cap hit poses a big challenge for any teams that are interested in acquiring him. Most teams that might benefit from his addition don’t have the cap space necessary to bring Hamilton to their roster.

The Devils will need to navigate the complicated cap landscape to complete a Hamilton trade. New Jersey sits in a playoff position and wants the flexibility to make additional moves that strengthen its Stanley Cup chances beyond this season.
