The NDA on Monday slammed West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee over his proposed March 6 sit-in against the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in her state.
The Election Commission (EC) is likely to announce the West Bengal assembly polls schedule next week.
After the EC published post-SIR electoral rolls on Feb 28, Mamata alleged that the names of 63.66 lakh genuine electorate have been removed from the voter lists “deliberately by the BJP and the EC” to tilt the electoral balance in their favour.
Reacting to the allegations, BJP national president Nitin Nabin, who reached Kishanganj on Monday, said her govt does not provide land for border fencing because of the appeasement policy of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). “Didi does not want the people of Bengal to be safe and secure.
That’s why she opposes SIR,” he said.
Union minister Giriraj Singh sharpened his attack and said Mamata is not the CM of a state, but has become the CM of bad governance. “She is scared that around one crore votes of Bangladeshi infiltrators will be deleted. Why will she protest against the SIR? Does she want infiltrators to become citizens of India?” he asked.
Giriraj alleged that Mamata has unlawfully enrolled approximately one crore Bangladeshi Muslims by getting Aadhaar and ration cards for them.
Union minister of state for home affairs Nityanand Rai accused Mamata and her party of practising appeasement politics. He said the people of West Bengal are suffering the consequences of the sins committed by the TMC and Mamata govt in West Bengal.
JD(U) spokesman and MLC Neeraj Kumar said those raising doubts over the SIR are not serious about public interest issues. “The opposition had tried to make SIR an issue in the recent Bihar assembly elections and lost,” he said.
RLM chief and former Union minister Upendra Kushwaha also said the TMC members know their defeat in the next elections is certain, so they are desperately resorting to such tactics.
