Australia joins hands with Isro to support Gaganyaan: How will it help astronauts?

As India inches closer to its maiden human spaceflight, the Gaganyaan mission, the collaborative spirit of space exploration has found a new home on a remote Australian atoll.

A sophisticated tracking antenna, alongside control and storage units from the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro), has officially arrived at Site 5 of the Old Quarantine Station on the Cocos Islands, a remote territory of Australia on the Indian Ocean.

This logistical milestone marks a critical phase in the Gaganyaan mission, India’s ambitious venture to send its own astronauts into the celestial silence of low-Earth orbit.

The Gaganyaan Crew Module is designed to sustain three Indian astronauts, or Gaganyatris, at an altitude of approximately 400 kilometres.

Slated to be launched atop the Launch Vehicle Mark-III (LVM3) rocket, this mission represents more than just technical prowess; it is a bid for India to join an elite group of nations capable of independent human spaceflight.

However, maintaining a constant link with a spacecraft travelling at orbital velocities requires a global network of ground stations to bridge the communication gaps over vast oceans.

WHAT ROLE DOES THE GAGANYAAN CREW MODULE PLAY?

The Gaganyaan Crew Module is the heartbeat of the mission, acting as a pressurised, self-sustaining habitat that shields astronauts from the vacuum of space.

It is paired with a service module that manages propulsion and power, creating a sophisticated spacecraft capable of orbiting the Earth for several days.

For the mission to be 100 per cent successful, Isro must monitor every heartbeat of the spacecraft in real time.

The newly arrived antenna on the Cocos Islands will function as a vital communication relay, ensuring that even as the spacecraft drifts over the southern Indian Ocean, mission control in India never loses sight of its pioneers.

WHY IS THE COCOS ISLANDS’ TRACKING STATION CRITICAL FOR ISRO?

Geography is often the silent partner in space exploration. The strategic location of the Cocos Islands allows Isro to eliminate blind spots that occur when the spacecraft moves beyond the range of mainland Indian ground stations.

By hosting this Isro infrastructure, Australia and its partners at engineering services firm Nova Systems are providing the essential eyes and ears needed during the most sensitive phases of the flight.

This international synergy ensures that telemetry and tracking data flow uninterrupted, securing the safety of the crew as they traverse the final frontier.
