Beijing shines as astronaut captures fireworks to mark Chinese New Year

Twinkling fireworks lighting up the night sky over Beijing provided a spectacular sight for a Nasa astronaut looking out of the Cupola observation module on the International Space Station.

Astronaut Chris Williams captured this breathtaking scene as the ISS cruised at 28,000 kilometres per hour, witnessing the Year of the Horse celebrations in a way no human on Earth could.

The year 2026 is specifically the Year of the Fire Horse, a rare event that occurs only once every 60 years. In Chinese culture, this signifies a period of immense energy, boldness, and rapid change, as the Horse represents independence while the Fire element adds a layer of intense passion and momentum.

WHAT DID THE ASTRONAUT SEE FROM SPACE?

Looking down from 400 kilometres above, the vast urban landscape of the Chinese capital appeared transformed.

Instead of the usual steady glow of streetlights, the astronaut witnessed the rhythmic twinkling of countless fireworks.

These bursts of light, though small from such a height, created a shimmering effect across the city.

The Cupola, a seven-windowed observation module, provided the perfect panoramic vantage point for this orbital celebration.

It is rare for specific ground events to be so clearly visible, but the sheer scale of the Lunar New Year celebrations made the light show pop out against the darkness of the nightside of Earth.

HOW DOES NASA TRACK HOLIDAYS FROM ORBIT?

While the crew follows a strict schedule regulated by Coordinated Universal Time, they often look out for cultural milestones.

For an astronaut over Beijing, the timing was perfect.

Scientists note that increased light pollution during festivals is actually measurable from space. Studies show that during major holidays, urban light intensity can increase by 20 to 50 per cent.

This extra brightness is not just beautiful; it helps researchers track human activity and energy patterns across the globe.

By watching these tiny sparks from the silent vacuum of space, astronauts stay connected to the heartbeat of humanity, even while living amongst the stars.
