India Declares Diplomatic Posts in Bangladesh ‘Non-Family’ Over Security Fears
India has declared all its diplomatic missions in Bangladesh as “non-family” stations, barring officials from bringing their families due to heightened security risks. The immediate order, effective from Friday, mandates the return of dependents to India.
Key Details of the Security Move
- Scope: Applies to all Indian missions, including the High Commission in Dhaka and posts in Chattogram and Rajshahi.
- Reason: A “careful assessment” of the prevailing security situation in Bangladesh.
- Functionality: Missions will continue operations with essential staff only.
Preceding Advisory and Warnings
The decision follows a security alert issued by the Indian High Commission in Dhaka on Thursday. It urged Indian nationals, particularly in the capital, to exercise “utmost caution.” The advisory cited reports of attacks on places of worship and incitement on social media, advising against non-essential travel and movement.

The MEA stated that dependents of officials are being advised to return to India until further notice.
Context: Violent Protests in Bangladesh
This diplomatic action unfolds against a backdrop of violent unrest in Bangladesh. Protests against the government’s job quota system have turned deadly, with at least 114 people killed in clashes with security forces since July 17.
Instructions for Indian Nationals
The advisory also calls for Indian citizens in Bangladesh to register with the nearest Indian mission. Authorities confirmed that Indian missions are in touch with Bangladeshi officials to ensure the safety of Indian nationals.
