SpaceX Crew-11 Return Delayed After ISS Medical Emergency

SpaceX Crew-11 Return Delayed After Medical Emergency on ISS

Key Takeaway: The undocking of the SpaceX Crew Dragon “Endurance” from the International Space Station has been postponed due to a non-life-threatening medical situation involving a Crew-11 astronaut. NASA confirms the crew member is stable.

In a sudden development, NASA and SpaceX have delayed the return of the Crew-11 mission from the International Space Station. The decision came just two hours before the scheduled undocking time of 10:05 PM IST on Tuesday.

What Happened?

Mission control announced a hold due to a “medical situation” with one of the four Crew-11 members. NASA has not identified the astronaut involved but confirmed the emergency is not life-threatening. The affected individual is under the care of the crew’s medical officer and is reported to be in stable condition.

“The teams are assessing the situation and will provide an update on the new undocking time once a thorough evaluation is complete,” a NASA spokesperson stated during a live broadcast. “The crew’s health and safety are our top priority.”

Crew and Mission Status

The Crew-11 team, which has spent nearly six months on the ISS, includes:

  • NASA astronauts Matthew Dominick, Michael Barratt, and Jeanette Epps
  • Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkin

Their spacecraft, the Crew Dragon “Endurance,” remains securely docked to the station’s Harmony module. The delay disrupts the complex schedule of orbital operations, including preparations for the arrival of the next crewed mission. The ISS currently hosts 11 astronauts from various expeditions.

What’s Next?

NASA will announce a new timeline for undocking after a full assessment. Once cleared, the return journey to Earth—involving re-entry and a parachute-assisted splashdown off the Florida coast—will take about 19 hours. The agency will provide live coverage of the undocking and splashdown when operations resume.

The incident underscores the inherent risks of spaceflight and the robust medical protocols in place aboard the orbiting laboratory .
