X Now Shows Account Country of Origin to Fight Misinformation

X Introduces ‘About This Account’ to Combat Misinformation

X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, is launching a new transparency feature that reveals key background details for all user accounts. The ‘About this account’ panel shows a profile’s country of origin, join date, username history, and app source, aiming to help users identify bots and AI-generated accounts.

Key Takeaways

  • X’s new feature displays account creation date, country of origin, and username changes
  • Tool helps distinguish real users from bots and misinformation spreaders
  • Currently rolling out gradually, with privacy controls for location display

What the Feature Reveals

The transparency panel provides several crucial data points about any X account:

  • Base location: Country or region where the account operates
  • Username history: Number of times the handle has been changed
  • Original join date: When the account was created
  • App source: Whether downloaded from App Store or Google Play

According to X’s head of product Nikita Bier, who first tested the feature in October, this gives users “enough contextual information to judge whether an account is legitimate or attempting to spread misinformation.”

How to Access Account Information

Accessing the new feature is straightforward. On both web and mobile versions of X, simply tap the “Joined” date beside any username. This opens a dedicated page showing the account’s complete metadata.

These details can reveal suspicious patterns – for example, when an account claiming to be from one country shows activity originating from another location entirely.

Gradual Rollout with Privacy Controls

The feature is currently in limited release. While many users can now view their own account data, the same information isn’t yet visible when checking other profiles. This phased approach allows users to verify their information accuracy before it becomes public.

Privacy settings remain flexible. Through the Privacy and Safety menu, users can choose to display either their specific country or a broader geographical region, balancing transparency with personal safety.

Following Industry Standards

X’s move aligns with similar transparency initiatives across social media. Instagram has long provided “About this account” information including country details and name changes.

As misinformation and AI-generated content proliferate online, X’s transparency feature represents an important step toward accountability. While its effectiveness in curbing fake accounts remains to be seen, users now have better tools to understand who’s behind the content in their feeds.
