ChatGPT Go Now Free in India: What Existing Subscribers Should Know

Key Takeaways

  • ChatGPT Go is now completely free for all users in India
  • Existing subscribers don’t need to cancel their current plans
  • Automatic redemption process varies by platform (Web/Android vs iOS)
  • Accounts must be in ‘good standing’ with no payment issues

OpenAI has made its ChatGPT Go subscription completely free for Indian users starting immediately. The offer applies to both new and existing ChatGPT users across the country.

What Existing ChatGPT Go Subscribers Need to Know

Users who already purchased ChatGPT Go subscriptions via web or Android through Google Play Store don’t need to take any action. OpenAI will automatically redeem the promotional offer for them later this week.

For iOS users who subscribed through Apple’s App Store, the process requires reviewing redemption options through a specific link provided by OpenAI.

“We’ll automatically move your next billing date back by 12 months within the upcoming week. No action is required on your part. Note that your subscription must be in good standing to be eligible for automatic redemption. If you have existing discounts on your account, we’ll replace them with the promotion,” OpenAI says in a blog post.

Understanding ‘Good Standing’ Requirements

OpenAI clarifies that accounts in ‘good standing’ have no missed or declined payments. The company automatically assesses this status when processing the free subscription offer.

“If your account is not in good standing, you will not be able to redeem the promotion until your billing period ends, and you resubscribe after adding a valid payment method,” OpenAI says.

ChatGPT Go Subscription Benefits

The ChatGPT Go plan, originally priced at ₹399 for 12 months, provides significant advantages over the free version:

  • 10 times higher access to GPT-5 model
  • 10 times higher image generation capabilities

Existing free ChatGPT users will receive automatic pop-up notifications to upgrade to ChatGPT Go without any cost. However, users still need to enter UPI or card details during subscription, with automatic billing occurring after one year during renewal.

In related developments, Reliance Jio is offering free Google AI Pro subscriptions for 1.5 years, while Airtel provides free Perplexity Pro subscriptions for one year.
