OpenAI Signs $38 Billion Cloud Deal With Amazon Web Services

Key Takeaways

  • OpenAI signs a $38 billion, 7-year cloud computing deal with Amazon
  • This marks the first-ever partnership between the AI startup and AWS
  • Amazon shares rose 5% premarket following the announcement

OpenAI has committed to a massive $38 billion cloud computing partnership with Amazon Web Services, marking the first direct collaboration between the AI pioneer and the cloud giant. The seven-year agreement will provide OpenAI with critical computing capacity to power its growing AI models and ChatGPT services.

Deal Details and Strategic Importance

The partnership, announced Monday, addresses OpenAI’s urgent computing needs by providing access to powerful Nvidia chips within Amazon’s data centers. By the end of next year, all negotiated computing capacity will be available to the ChatGPT maker.

For Amazon, this represents a strategic victory as it faces pressure from investors to accelerate AWS growth. While AWS remains the industry’s largest cloud provider, rivals Microsoft and Google have reported faster revenue growth from capturing AI customers.

Under the seven-year pact, OpenAI will train new AI models using Amazon’s data centers and process ChatGPT queries. The company may also utilize Amazon’s CPUs for agentic AI applications where technology operates autonomously.

Context and Competitive Landscape

Although smaller than OpenAI’s $300 billion deal with Oracle and $250 billion commitment to Microsoft, this agreement represents Amazon’s crucial first step in securing business from a company planning to spend trillions on computing power in coming years.

Amazon recently outlined aggressive data-center expansion plans, with cloud revenue growing 20% in the latest quarter – the fastest rate since 2022. The company also operates an $11 billion data-center campus in Indiana for OpenAI rival Anthropic, where Amazon has invested $8 billion.

However, Anthropic’s recent agreement to use up to one million of Google’s TPU AI chips has raised questions about potential workload shifts away from Amazon.

Breaking Exclusive Partnerships

Amazon previously couldn’t sell cloud services to OpenAI due to the startup’s exclusive partnership with Microsoft. OpenAI ended that arrangement last month during contract renegotiations and has since pursued multiple cloud deals to meet massive computing demands.

OpenAI now holds nearly $600 billion in cloud commitments across Oracle, Microsoft, and Amazon, plus an undisclosed agreement with Google signed earlier this year.

Financial Implications

With projected 2024 revenue of $13 billion, OpenAI must maintain exponential sales growth to fund its computing requirements. CEO Sam Altman has acknowledged severe computing shortages and expects revenue acceleration as more capacity becomes available.
