Nonprofit Accuses OpenAI of Intimidation in AI Safety Bill Debate

Nonprofit Accuses OpenAI of Intimidation Over California AI Safety Bill

A small nonprofit, Encode Justice, has accused OpenAI of using intimidation tactics to weaken a proposed California AI safety bill. The allegations center on the California Transparency in Frontier Artificial Intelligence Act.

Key Allegations and Denials

Nathan Calvin, legal counsel for Encode Justice, made the accusations in a social media post. He claimed OpenAI is leveraging its lawsuit against Elon Musk to intimidate critics.

OpenAI’s chief strategy officer, Jason Kwon, publicly dismissed these claims. In his response, he questioned Encode’s funding sources, hinting at potential backing from Elon Musk—an allegation Calvin strongly denied.

The proposed AI safety legislation remains under active debate in California.

Internal OpenAI Reaction

The situation drew comments from OpenAI employees, including head of mission alignment Joshua Achiam. He described the developing controversy as “not great” in a personal social media post.
