Amazon to Cut 14,000 Jobs Worldwide, Hundreds of UK Roles at Risk

Key Takeaways

  • Amazon plans to cut 14,000 corporate jobs globally, affecting hundreds of UK positions
  • The cuts represent about 4% of Amazon’s 350,000-strong global corporate workforce
  • Company will invest £89 billion in AI infrastructure while reducing bureaucracy

Hundreds of UK jobs face uncertainty as Amazon announces major workforce reductions affecting 14,000 corporate roles worldwide. The tech giant confirmed these cuts target office-based positions, excluding warehouse and delivery staff.

UK Impact and Workforce Details

While Amazon hasn’t specified exact locations for job reductions, sources indicate British operations will inevitably be affected due to their scale. The company employs approximately 75,000 people across the UK, though it doesn’t disclose how many work in corporate offices.

Globally, Amazon’s corporate workforce totals around 350,000 employees, meaning these cuts will eliminate roughly 4% of office-based roles.

Strategic Shift Toward AI Investment

Beth Galetti, Amazon’s Senior Vice President, explained the company aims to “operate like the world’s largest start-up” through these restructuring efforts. She stated the moves focus on “reducing bureaucracy, removing layers and shifting resources to ensure we’re investing in our biggest bets.”

Artificial intelligence represents one of these strategic priorities, with Galetti calling AI “the most transformative technology we’ve seen since the internet.”

Continued Hiring in Strategic Areas

Despite the workforce reductions, Amazon will continue recruiting in what Galetti described as “key strategic areas” of the business. The company plans to invest £89 billion this year, primarily to construct massive data centers that will power AI systems.

This substantial investment underscores Amazon’s determination to compete effectively with tech rivals Microsoft and Google in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape.
