WhatsApp rolls out group chat history, will allow new members to know what is going on in the group

WhatsApp has launched a new feature aimed at streamlining group conversations by allowing the sharing of recent group message history with newly added members. Announced on Friday, the update targets one of the platform’s most requested improvements, aiming to reduce interruptions and confusion when someone joins a group chat. The feature is being rolled out globally and will soon be available for both Android and iOS users, with WhatsApp encouraging users to update to the latest app version to access it.

Previously, users added to a group could only see messages sent after their admission, often leaving them out of crucial context and requiring other members to forward older messages manually. With the new group message history option, both group admins and members now have the ability to share past messages in a structured way. They can select a specific number of messages—from as few as 25 up to a maximum of 100—to send to new participants, providing flexibility based on the nature of the group.

Unlike automatic message archiving, sending group message history is an intentional step. When a new person joins, admins and members see an option to send recent messages, ensuring only the most relevant context is passed along. Admins also have the ability to disable this setting for their groups, further maintaining control over group information. Admins will always retain the option to share history as needed.

Privacy remains central to the new feature. WhatsApp has emphasized that the group message history continues to be protected by end-to-end encryption, ensuring only group participants can access the shared messages. The feature does not compromise the platform’s established encryption standards, and message visibility remains restricted to group environments.

Transparency is reinforced through clear notifications to all group members when history is shared. According to WhatsApp, “For transparency, when message history is sent, everyone in the group is notified, with clear timestamps and sender information, and message history is visually distinct from regular messages.” This approach aims to avoid confusion and maintain accountability within group chats.

The option to share message history is designed to cater to different group types, whether professional, community, or personal chats. By allowing a choice in the number of messages forwarded, WhatsApp provides flexibility and avoids overwhelming new members with unnecessary information. This update is expected to streamline coordination and reduce the routine need for recapping past discussions.

The rollout for group message history is gradual, with WhatsApp stating that the feature is already being made available to users worldwide. Both admins and regular group members can initiate sharing, but the process must always be deliberate—there is no automation, which helps safeguard privacy and prevent accidental oversharing.

For users looking to access the new functionality, updating the app to the latest version is required. As the global release continues, WhatsApp positions the group message history feature as a further step in enhancing the group chat experience by balancing ease of use, transparency, and privacy.
