Meta Adds Parental Controls for Teen AI Chatbot Interactions

Meta Introduces Parental Controls for Teen AI Interactions

Meta will launch new parental controls early next year, giving parents oversight over their children’s interactions with AI chatbots. The features include the ability to completely disable one-on-one chats with AI characters.

Key Takeaways

  • Parents can block specific AI chatbots or disable all one-on-one AI chats
  • Meta’s core AI assistant cannot be turned off completely
  • Parents receive insights about chat topics but not full conversation access
  • PG-13 content restrictions now apply to both Instagram and AI chats

What Parents Can Control

While parents cannot disable Meta’s primary AI assistant, they can block individual chatbots they find concerning. Meta will provide “insights” about what topics their children discuss with AI characters, though full chat transcripts remain private.

Broader Safety Context

The announcement comes as Meta faces ongoing scrutiny about platform safety for young users. AI chatbots specifically face legal challenges, with some lawsuits alleging harmful interactions contributed to teen suicides.

Despite these concerns, a Common Sense Media study reveals significant teen AI adoption: over 70% have used AI companions, with half being regular users.

Expanded Content Restrictions

Meta also announced that teen Instagram accounts will default to PG-13 content settings, preventing exposure to explicit material involving sex, drugs, or dangerous activities. These restrictions now extend to AI chatbot interactions as well.

Advocacy Group Response

Children’s safety advocates expressed skepticism about Meta’s motives. Josh Golin, executive director of Fairplay, stated: “From my perspective, these announcements are about two things. They’re about forestalling legislation that Meta doesn’t want to see, and they’re about reassuring parents who are understandably concerned about what’s happening on Instagram.”
