After Mark Zuckerberg’s court trial, National Parent Teacher Association tells Meta: Don’t need your funding

Facebook parent Meta won’t be allowed to fund the US National Parent Teacher Association anymore. This comes as legal scrutiny surrounding the social media giant’s child-safety practices continues following CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s recent court trial. The education-focused nonprofit said it will no longer seek financial backing from Meta for its digital safety initiatives.

In a letter to members obtained by CNBC, National PTA president Yvonne Johnson said the organisation will not

referring to a programme aimed at helping parents, children, and teachers better understand online safety tools and resources. Explaining the move, Johnson wrote, However, she did not disclose how much funding the organisation had previously received from Meta.

The social media company is currently facing court proceedings in California and New Mexico over allegations that Meta misled the public regarding the safety of platforms such as Instagram. This week, Zuckerberg testified in Los Angeles Superior Court in a case involving a plaintiff identified as KGM, who claims she developed an addiction to apps, including Instagram and YouTube, due to certain design features and experienced significant mental distress as a result.

Meta is also part of a separate ongoing case in New Mexico, where the state’s attorney general has alleged that the company failed to protect its platforms from online predators adequately.

Parents SOS called on the organisation to sever all ties with its other big tech partners, such as Discord, Google, and TikTok, in light of concerns for the safety and well-being of children.

These companies, together with a number of other tech firms, are facing a number of lawsuits in the US concerning allegations that the design of their platforms could negatively affect the mental health and safety of children.

This lawsuit follows a report published by the Tech Transparency Project a number of months earlier, which examined Meta’s ties to the National PTA and found that the company was likely participating in a larger effort to influence public discourse about child safety on Instagram.
