Record hundred, but no joy: Pakistan’s Sahibzada Farhan on T20 World Cup heartbreak

Pakistan batter Sahibzada Farhan said that he was unhappy with his record-breaking hundred against Sri Lanka after his team were knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2026. The Men in Green beat Sri Lanka by five runs in a thrilling Super 8 fixture on Saturday, 28 February, at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

Despite their win, they were eliminated from the tournament after failing to restrict Sri Lanka to 147 and surpass New Zealand on net run rate. As a result, the Blackcaps qualified for the semi-final ahead of them from Super 8 Group 2, along with England. Following Pakistan’s victory, Farhan was deservedly adjudged Player of the Match for his magnificent innings of 100 off 60 balls.

While receiving the award, the Pakistan opener expressed his disappointment at being knocked out of the tournament, stating that his hundred would have meant more had it helped the team qualify.

“”First of all, I had it in my mind that, we would do well as a team. The way Fakhar was playing, I actually felt that if he had scored a hundred, it would have been even better for the team. But it was my destiny to get it. Honestly, this hundred did not help the team win. Individually, it was good for me, but it wasn’t good for the team result,” said Farhan in the post-match presentation.

He also credited his consistent performances in domestic cricket for his rich form at the international level.

“As I said before, a lot of credit goes to domestic cricket. I’ve been playing domestic cricket regularly for the last four years. I topped the run-charts in domestic cricket, PSL, and finished third in the Asia Cup as well and I top-scored here too. Playing consistently in domestic cricket helped me get used to scoring hundreds and fifties at a good strike-rate. I think that form is continuing here. Making a record for Pakistan is a very happy moment for me,” he added.

What are the records that Farhan broke?

Farhan was involved in a record-breaking 176-run stand for the first wicket in T20 World Cup history with Fakhar Zaman (84 off 42). The right-handed batter struck nine fours and five sixes in his belligerent innings, helping his team get off to a terrific start. During his knock, he also broke Virat Kohli’s record (319) for the most runs in a single edition of the T20 World Cup.

Farhan also became the first batter to score two centuries in a single edition of the tournament and drew level with Chris Gayle (2) for the most centuries in T20 World Cup history. He finished the tournament with 383 runs from six innings at an average of 76.60 and a strike rate of 160.25, with two hundreds and as many fifties to his name.
