Rain and thunder likely in several states on Tuesday, low-pressure system weakens

A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has weakened, but its impact will continue to be felt across several parts of the country on Tuesday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal moved northeastwards and weakened into a low-pressure area early Tuesday morning.

At 5:30 am IST on February 23, 2026, it lay over the southwest and adjoining central Bay of Bengal and persisted over the same region at 8:30 am. The system is expected to continue moving northeastwards and gradually weaken further over the next 24 hours.

Under its influence, fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph, is likely over the Andaman & Nicobar Islands between February 23 and 25.

On Tuesday, isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds is expected over Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh.

Odisha is also likely to receive rain on Tuesday and Wednesday. Thunderstorm and lightning activity is forecast over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Assam and Meghalaya, Telangana, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Kerala and Mahe, Lakshadweep, Interior Karnataka, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam.

In north India, isolated light rainfall or snowfall is likely over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Tuesday. East Rajasthan and west Uttar Pradesh may also see isolated light rain.

Meanwhile, dense fog conditions are expected during morning hours in isolated pockets of Punjab until February 24, which could affect visibility for commuters.

Temperature trends will vary across regions. Northwest India is likely to see a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius over the next four days, making temperatures 3-5 degrees above normal in many areas during the week.

In contrast, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh may experience a slight drop in daytime temperatures over the next three days before a gradual rise later in the week.

Gujarat is likely to see a fall of 2-3 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures over the next 24 hours, while Maharashtra is expected to witness no major change initially, followed by a gradual rise later in the week.

The IMD has advised residents in affected areas to stay alert for thunderstorms and strong winds on Tuesday.
