Mud volcano erupts in Colombia. Know science behind the phenomenon

In the quiet town of San Juan de Uraba in Colombia’s Antioquia Department, nature unleashed a dramatic spectacle on February 25, 2026. A mud volcano suddenly erupted, hurling flames and thick sludge high into the sky, close to the local water treatment plant.

Captured on video, the event started with a massive fireball that lit up the hazy horizon, followed by billowing smoke and ongoing flames.

While no humans were hurt, the blast killed some livestock, scorched vegetation, and cracked nearby roads.

This is not your typical fiery volcano. Mud volcanoes are geological wonders that bubble up mud, water, and gases from deep underground pressures.

WHAT IS A MUD VOLCANO?

Unlike lava-spewing giants like Mount Etna, mud volcanoes form when underground reservoirs of mud and gas build up pressure and burst through the surface.

In this case, officials call it diapirism, where methane gas ignites on release, creating that eye-popping fireball.

Diapirism is a geological process where less dense, buoyant material like gas-charged mud or salt buried deep underground slowly rises through denser overlying rock layers due to buoyancy, or the upward force exerted by a fluid on an object immersed in it. This is similar to a balloon rising up in the air.

In the case of mud volcanoes, this upward movement can build intense pressure until the material suddenly erupts at the surface, releasing mud, water, and trapped methane gas that may ignite into flames, as seen in the recent event in San Juan de Uraba, Colombia.

Colombia boasts over 100 such sites, making it a hotspot for these quirky eruptions that fascinate scientists and locals alike.

WHAT CAUSED THIS ERUPTION?

The trigger? A sudden release of pent-up methane gas, which caught fire mid-air.

Located near the town’s water plant, the volcano had been dormant, but underground shifts, possibly from tectonic activity in this seismically active region, pushed the mix to the brink.

No earthquakes were reported, but experts say such events can happen without warning, turning a peaceful landscape into a chaotic scene in seconds.

WHAT ARE THE IMPACTS SO FAR?

The eruption damaged access roads to the Siete Vueltas area and affected a water storage system, prompting concerns over supply disruptions.

Three homes were evacuated as a precaution, and ground cracks have appeared, raising fears of more activity.

Livestock losses hit local farmers hard.

HOW ARE AUTHORITIES RESPONDING?

Colombia’s National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) and Antioquia’s Departmental Risk Management (DAGRAN) sprang into action.

They have declared an emergency, sent technical teams, and deployed heavy machinery to fix roads.

Monitoring continues around the clock to spot any further risks, ensuring the community stays safe amid this natural turmoil.

These events remind us of Earth’s hidden forces, blending danger with scientific intrigue. As investigations unfold, San Juan de Uraba stands resilient.
