His visit was planned: Cesar Awards dismiss Jim Carrey’s impersonation rumours

The French organisation that invited Jim Carrey to the Cesar Awards has responded to growing speculation surrounding the actor’s appearance at the prestigious ceremony. On February 26, Carrey received a lifetime achievement honour in Paris in recognition of his contributions to film and television.

His appearance at the event, widely regarded as France’s equivalent of the Oscars, soon sparked widespread discussion online, with some social media users even questioning whether it was really him on stage. Gregory Caulier, the general delegate of the Cesar Awards, addressed the speculation in a statement to Variety. He clarified that Carrey’s appearance at the ceremony was entirely genuine, describing it as “a historic moment” and dismissing the rumours as a “non-issue.”

“Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer. From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation. Eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions. He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words,” he said.

Gregory added that Carrey attended the event with his partner, his daughter, his grandson and a dozen close friends and family members. He added, “For me, it’s a non-issue. I just remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance.”

During the ceremony, Carrey delivered an emotional speech in French, capturing the audience’s attention and further solidifying his presence at the event. The speech was widely discussed across media platforms. Many praised Carrey’s effort to connect with the French audience, noting his respectful and heartfelt tone.

In his acceptance speech, Carrey said, “As an actor, each character you play is like clay in a sculptor’s hands, which you shape to your heart’s desire. How fortunate I have been to share this art with so many people who have truly opened their hearts to me.”

“Thank you to my wonderful family, my daughter Jane, and my grandson Jackson. I love you now and forever. Thank you to my sublime companion, Mina. I love you, Mina. And finally, thank you to the funniest man I have ever known: my father. Percy Joseph Carrey, who taught me the value of love, generosity, and laughter…So, how was my French? Almost mediocre, right? Forgive me, I didn’t speak French, but I’m just learning it. My tongue is tired,” he said.

Carrey is widely recognised for his roles in films like The Mask, Liar Liar, Dumb and Dumber, The Truman Show and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Over a career spanning four decades, he has worked across stand-up comedy, television, cinema, literature and visual arts.
