Katy Perry has denied allegations made by Australian actor Ruby Rose, who accused the singer of sexually assaulting her more than a decade ago at a nightclub in Australia.
A representative for Perry called the claims false and harmful in a statement to Rolling Stone. “The allegations being circulated on social media by Ruby Rose about Katy Perry are not only categorically false, they are dangerous, reckless lies,” the statement said. It added that Rose has a history of making serious public allegations on social media that have been denied by the individuals named.
Allegations surface on social media
The 40-year-old made the allegations on Sunday night in response to a post about Perry mocking Justin Bieber’s Coachella performance. She wrote on Threads, “Katy Perry sexual[ly] assaulted me at spice market nightclub in Melbourne. Who gives a s*** what she thinks (sic).”
She provided more details in later posts, saying the 41-year-old did not kiss her but instead “bent down, pulled her underwear to the side and rubbed her disgusting v***** on my face until my eyes snapped open and I projectile vomited on her (sic).”
Claims of evidence and police report
Rose said she had photos supporting her claim and that several people witnessed the incident. She also said that she filed a police report on Sunday, though she did not clarify if it was about the alleged assault or another issue mentioned online.
While the actor did not give an exact date for the incident, she said it happened over ten years ago. Australian reports place both Perry and Rose at the Spice Market nightclub in Melbourne in August 2010.
Why she stayed silent for two decades?
Rose said she had previously mentioned the incident but described it differently. “I told the story publicly but changed it to be a ‘funny little drunk story’ because I didn’t know how else to handle it,” she said. She added that Perry later helped her obtain a US visa, which is why she kept the matter private.
The actor said she was in her early 20s at the time and is now 40. “It has taken almost 2 decades to say this publicly. Though I am so grateful to have made it long enough to find my voice, it just shows how much of an impact trauma and sexual assault takes. Thank you for seeing me.”
