Space Station is planned to crash in 2030. US government wants to extend its life

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s plan to retire the International Space Station in 2030 may now be delayed, as US lawmakers push to extend the orbiting laboratory’s life by two years amid intensifying competition with China in space.

The US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation is set to consider legislation on March 4 that would amend Nasa’s authorisation bill, shifting the ISS retirement date from 2030 to 2032.

The proposal has bipartisan backing from Committee Chair Ted Cruz and Ranking Member Maria Cantwell.

The extension is aimed at giving American companies more time to develop a commercial replacement for the ISS, which has been continuously inhabited for more than two decades. Nasa has been funding early-stage concepts for privately operated space stations, with involvement from companies such as Blue Origin and Voyager Space.

However, progress toward having a new station operational by 2030 has been slower than expected, raising concerns about a potential gap in U.S. human spaceflight capabilities in low-Earth orbit.

The debate comes as China expands its presence in space through its Tiangong space station and advances plans for a crewed lunar landing by 2030.

Lawmakers view extending the ISS as part of a broader strategy to counter Beijing’s growing footprint and maintain U.S. leadership in orbit.

space station

Nasa had already selected SpaceX to build a spacecraft capable of safely guiding the ISS into Earth’s atmosphere for a controlled destruction at the end of its service life, citing debris risks and maintenance costs as reasons against preserving it as a museum in space.

In recent years, the ISS has experienced small air leaks and aging hardware issues, reinforcing Nasa’s long-term retirement plans. Still, supporters of the extension argue the station remains a critical research platform for microgravity science and astronaut training.

The Senate bill would also require Nasa to establish a sustained human presence on the Moon under its Artemis program. Both SpaceX and Blue Origin are developing lunar landers for Artemis missions, as Washington seeks to accelerate timelines in response to China’s parallel ambitions.

If approved, the ISS extension would buy time for commercial successors, and ensure that when the station finally plunges into the atmosphere, the United States is ready for its next chapter in space.
