Rain expected over hills on Thursday, dry conditions to prevail in the plains

Temperatures are rising as India transitions into a warmer phase, with several regions already feeling the heat.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), maximum temperatures are expected to stay between three and five degrees Celsius above normal across many parts of Northwest India this week.

For Thursday, February 26, the forecast suggests dry conditions will dominate the plains.

The mercury is already climbing, with Erode in Tamil Nadu recording a high of 37.8 degrees Celsius on February 24.

Devendra Tripathi, the founder of Mausam Tak and weather vlogger for Kisan Tak, notes that two circulations in the Arabian Sea are influencing these patterns.

One sits off the Gujarat coast, while another is near Kerala.

Devendra says that due to this, the flow of air entering the mainland region of India is increasing.

WILL THE HEATWAVE INTENSIFY TOMORROW?

Areas including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh will likely experience northwestern dry winds.

Devendra explains that while these winds keep temperatures in check during the morning, they will lead to a rise during the day as the sky remains clear.

Skymet reports that mercury levels are unlikely to dip in the capital soon.

Weather forecaster Navdeep Dahiya has also warned that maximum temperatures could eventually range between 34 and 39 degrees Celsius across the northwest.

IS RAIN EXPECTED IN ANY REGION?

While the north stays dry, some moisture is expected elsewhere. The IMD predicts isolated light rainfall or snowfall over Jammu and Kashmir.

Further south and east, light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms is likely over Arunachal Pradesh and parts of interior Karnataka.

Devendra mentions that clouds might appear over Maharashtra and Gujarat, but substantial rain is mostly restricted to the southern areas. Specifically, Kerala and Karnataka might see some showers.

SHOULD YOU BEWARE OF MORNING FOG?

Despite the afternoon heat, the IMD has issued a warning for dense fog during the morning hours in isolated pockets of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh for February 26.

Visibility could drop significantly, similar to the 50 metres recently reported in Amritsar.
