Detroit Tigers star Tarik Skubal reveals bold one-start WBC plan for Team USA before MLB season begins

Tarik Skubal will represent Team USA at the World Baseball Classic, but only briefly. The Detroit Tigers ace confirmed during spring training that he plans to make just one start in pool play before shifting his full focus back to the regular season. The update gives clarity to how he plans to manage a packed March schedule while staying committed to Detroit’s goals.

Skubal has become one of the most important arms in the Tigers rotation. With Opening Day approaching, his preparation matters not just for April but for the full 162-game grind. By choosing a limited role in the international tournament, he is making sure his buildup stays on track. It is a careful decision that reflects how seriously frontline pitchers now manage workload before the season begins.

The real reason Tarik Skubal is stepping back after one WBC start

“I’m trying to do both things, trying to pitch for Team USA, but I understand the need to be here with these guys and get ready for the season,” Skubal said. “I think it’s kind of the best of both worlds in that aspect, and I’m grateful they took me in that capacity.”

The World Baseball Classic brings high intensity games and national pride. But it also falls during a key part of spring training. Pitchers are still building arm strength, working on command, and fine tuning mechanics.

A deep tournament run can affect a starter’s rhythm and recovery schedule.

Detroit opens the regular season on March 26 against the San Diego Padres. With the WBC finals scheduled for March 17 in Miami, there would be limited time to reset if Skubal pitched into the knockout rounds. Limiting himself to one outing keeps his routine steady and reduces the risk of overuse before the season officially begins.

Skubal also shared that he hopes to rejoin Team USA later as a supporter if the club advances.

“If they go to the finals, I think I’m going to try and lobby to just go watch and be with the guys,” he said.

How Team USA plans to move forward without its Tigers ace

Even without Skubal beyond pool play, Team USA has strong options on the mound. The rotation includes National League Cy Young winner Paul Skenes, along with All Star starters Logan Webb and Joe Ryan. The upgraded pitching depth is viewed as a major strength compared to previous tournaments.

Team USA will begin pool play on March 6 after exhibition games against the San Francisco Giants and the Colorado Rockies. Expectations remain high as the United States looks to make another deep run.

For Skubal, the message is simple. Representing his country matters. But being fully ready for Detroit matters just as much. His one-start plan reflects balance, discipline, and long term focus on the season ahead.
