Fools, lapdogs, disgrace to nation: Trump’s all-out attack on court after tariff blow

US President Donald Trump was angry and disappointed after the Supreme Court struck down his global tariff policy, a cornerstone of his economic agenda that had significantly unsettled international trade. He vented his frustration in a series of social media posts, vehemently lashing out at the judges while defending his tariff strategy.

Within hours of the ruling, Trump posted at least five lengthy messages on his Truth Social platform criticising the verdict, with one going as long as over 430 words. He called the Supreme Court’s decision “deeply disappointing” and said he was “ashamed” of certain members of the court for lacking the “courage to do what is right for our country.” He also described the opinion as “ridiculous” and “nonsensical”.

Trump went further, referring to some members of the court as “fools” and “lapdogs” for the “RINOs and Radical Left Democrats”, while thanking the dissenting judges.

The of imposing global tariffs under an emergency powers law, with six justices forming the majority. The ruling, authored by Chief Justice John Roberts, included two justices appointed by Trump himself.

“The Supreme Court’s Ruling on TARIFFS is deeply disappointing! I am ashamed of certain Members of the Court for not having the Courage to do what is right for our Country,” Trump wrote on social media.

The US President added, “The Democrats on the Court are thrilled, but they will automatically vote “NO” against ANYTHING that makes America Strong and Healthy Again. They, also, are a Disgrace to our Nation”.

“Others think they’re being “politically correct,” which has happened before, far too often, with certain Members of this Court when, in fact, they’re just FOOLS and “LAPDOGS” for the RINOS and Radical Left Democrats and, not that this should have anything to do with it, very unpatriotic, and disloyal to the Constitution,” he continued his rant. RINOs is a term used to describe critics within the party — “Republican In Name Only”.

Trump also accused the court of being influenced by foreign interests and a political movement that he described as “obnoxious, ignorant, and loud”.

The Republican leader claimed the ruling, however, clarified the powers bestowed upon the president and suggested he could still impose a blanket ban on imports. He repeated his assertion that tariffs had strengthened the US economy, boosted revenue inflows and even contributed to global peace and security as a deterrent.

“I have very effectively utilised TARIFFS over the past year to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. Our Stock Market has just recently broken the 50,000 mark on the DOW and, simultaneously, 7,000 on the S&P, two numbers that everybody thought, upon our Landslide Election Victory, could not be attained until the very end of my Administration — Four years!,” he posted.

He further claimed tariffs had helped end five of the eight wars he had settled and had strengthened national security. Trump also said that, together with stronger border controls, tariffs had reduced fentanyl inflow into the US by 30 per cent, adding that “other alternatives will now be used” to replace the measures rejected by the court.

In another post, Trump targeted the two justices he had appointed — Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett — expressing surprise that they ruled against him. He claimed such situations “never seem to happen” with judges appointed by Democrats, alleging partisan bias in judicial decisions.

The US Supreme Court ruled that the tariffs imposed by Trump under an emergency powers law were unconstitutional, including the sweeping “reciprocal” duties levied on nearly all countries. The majority held that a president cannot unilaterally set or alter tariffs, as the constitutional power to tax rests with Congress.

However, the ruling does not prevent Trump from imposing tariffs under other statutes, which carry stricter limits on the speed and scope of such measures. Trump said those provisions would still allow him to “charge much more” than before.
