Google Gemini can now generate music, gives users access to Lyria

Google’s Gemini AI can now generate music for you based on whatever mood you’re in. The company has announced a new AI music-generation feature powered by Lyria 3, which users can access directly within the AI chatbot. Lyria 3 is built on Google DeepMind’s latest model and allows users to create a 30-second original track simply by typing a prompt or uploading a photo or video.

At its core, Lyria 3 is designed to allow users to create music as simply as typing an idea. Users can describe a concept in plain language, like asking it to create music inspired by your cat’s face, a funny video, or even a comical R&B slow jam about a sock finding their match. Once the prompt is given, Gemini will generate a 30-second original audio track based on that idea.

Google notes that there is no need to upload lyrics separately, the system will write them automatically.

How music generation in Gemini works

Google explains that the technology behind the AI-backed music generation comes from Google DeepMind, which developed Lyria 3 as an upgrade over earlier music models. According to the company, the new model produces more realistic, layered and expressive compositions, compared to its predecessors.

Within the app, the feature also allows users to adjust elements such as style, tempo and vocal feel, offering a degree of creative control. Google is also positioning the tool as a way to create fun, personalised soundtracks rather than as a replacement for professional music production.

Availability

Google began rolling out the feature on February 19, 2026. The feature will be first available on desktop, with mobile support following in the coming days. Note that the feature is only open to Gemini users aged 18 and above across eight languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and Portuguese. Subscribers to Google AI Plus, Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra receive higher usage limits.

Available on YouTube as well

Google is also expanding access to its music generation tool beyond the Gemini app. The company confirmed that Lyria 3 will power the Dream Track feature for creators on YouTube, broadening availability worldwide after initially launching in the United States. This integration could make it easier for creators to generate background music tailored to their videos without licensing third-party tracks.

Google notes that Lyria 3 is meant for original expression, not for imitating existing artists. If users mention a specific musician in a prompt, Gemini treats it as broad inspiration rather than attempting to replicate that artist’s voice or catalogue.
