India, Pakistan, Zimbabwe qualify for T20 World Cup 2028 along with six other teams

India, Pakistan, and Zimbabwe are among the nine teams that have qualified for the ICC T20 World Cup 2028, which will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

All teams that progressed to the Super Eights of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 secured automatic qualification for the next edition. Alongside India, Pakistan, and Zimbabwe, the other qualified teams are Sri Lanka, West Indies, England, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.

The final Super 8s lineup was confirmed after Pakistan defeated Namibia by 102 runs in their Group A match on February 17 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Australia failed to qualify for the Super Eights after losses to Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in the group stage. However, they secured a place in the 2028 tournament as co-hosts.

DID BANGLADESH QUALIFY?

In addition to the nine teams already qualified for the T20 World Cup 2028, three more sides will earn direct entry based on the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings as of March 9 – the day after the final of the ongoing tournament on March 8. These spots will go to the next three highest-ranked teams not yet qualified.

At present, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Ireland are in contention for those places. With no international fixtures scheduled before the cut-off date, their rankings are unlikely to change, putting them in a strong position to qualify directly.

Bangladesh were initially set to participate in the current World Cup but withdrew from the tournament, citing security concerns over playing their matches in India. They were subsequently replaced by Scotland.

Afghanistan and Ireland, meanwhile, endured disappointing campaigns in 2026 after failing to reach the Super Eights. However, they may still avoid the qualification route for the 2028 edition if their rankings hold.

The remaining eight spots in the 20-team tournament will be filled through regional qualifying tournaments, with each region allocated berths based on its overall competitive strength.
