External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has strongly rejected criticism of India’s position on the Ukraine war, calling it “unfair and unjustified.” Speaking at a press conference in Munich on Friday, he asserted India’s longstanding friendship with Russia and confirmed New Delhi is open to mediating in the conflict if asked.

Jaishankar addressed the perception of India’s neutrality, stating that the country’s relationship with Russia has endured for decades. He emphasized that India stands by its partners during difficult times.

“We are not a fair-weather friend. We are a friend in difficult times. We have been a friend of Russia for many decades. We have a relationship with Russia that has stood the test of time,” Jaishankar said.

Open to Mediation Role

The External Affairs Minister revealed that India has been approached to assist in finding a resolution to the ongoing war. He indicated New Delhi’s willingness to contribute to peace efforts.

“We have been asked to help in the resolution of the conflict. We are open to helping if we can,” he added.

A Complex Global Concern

Jaishankar reiterated India’s consistent position, describing the Ukraine conflict as a deeply complex matter without simple solutions. He highlighted that the war’s repercussions are a concern for the entire international community.

“We have been very clear that the conflict in Ukraine is a very complex issue. There is no easy solution. We have been very clear that the conflict in Ukraine is a matter of concern for the entire world,” he said.

The minister’s remarks underscore India’s balanced diplomatic approach, maintaining its strategic ties while expressing openness to a role in ending the hostilities.
