Akmal Urges Rizwan to Leave BBL, Focus on Pakistan Duty

Kamran Akmal Urges Mohammad Rizwan to Leave BBL, Return for South Africa Series

Key Takeaways

  • Former keeper Kamran Akmal has publicly urged Mohammad Rizwan to return to Pakistan from the BBL.
  • Rizwan has scored only 31 runs in three innings for Melbourne Stars, including a first-ball duck.
  • Akmal wants Rizwan to focus on national duty and regain form in domestic cricket before the crucial South Africa tour in February.

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal has called for Mohammad Rizwan to cut short his Big Bash League stint and return home to prepare for the national team’s upcoming series against South Africa. This comes after a worrying run of form for the star batter in the Australian T20 tournament.

Rizwan’s Struggles in the BBL

Representing the Melbourne Stars, Rizwan has managed a meagre 31 runs across his first three innings. His campaign hit a low with a first-ball duck against Sydney Thunder on January 13. Earlier scores of 22 and 9 have done little to inspire confidence.

Akmal’s Direct Appeal

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Akmal was unequivocal, stating Rizwan should prioritise Pakistan over franchise cricket.

“Rizwan should return to Pakistan. He should come back and prepare for the South Africa series. He is not in form. He is struggling in the BBL. He should return and play domestic cricket to regain his form,” Akmal said.

The Crucial South Africa Assignment

Pakistan is scheduled to play three T20Is and three ODIs in South Africa starting February 3. Rizwan is a linchpin of Pakistan’s white-ball side, having scored 500 runs in 14 T20Is last year at an impressive average of 45.45. His current BBL form, however, casts doubt on his readiness.

Akmal reiterated his stance, emphasising the senior player’s responsibility.

“He is a senior player and he should take responsibility. He should come back and prepare for the South Africa series. He should play domestic cricket and get some runs under his belt,” Akmal added.

Broader Concerns for Pakistan

Rizwan isn’t the only Pakistani struggling in the BBL. Teammate Haris Rauf has also had a tough time, conceding 100 runs in his first two matches without a wicket for the Stars.

With the T20 World Cup in June, Pakistan will be desperate for both key players to rediscover their form during the South Africa series, which is vital for building momentum.
