Chelsea Crush Barcelona 3-0 in Champions League Dominance

Chelsea Demolish 10-Man Barcelona 3-0 as Manchester City Suffer First Defeat

Key Takeaways

  • Chelsea dominate Barcelona 3-0 with teenage star Estevao shining
  • Barcelona captain Araujo sent off before halftime
  • Manchester City lose 2-0 to Leverkusen after resting key players
  • Guardiola takes “full responsibility” for team selection

Chelsea delivered a stunning Champions League performance, crushing Barcelona 3-0 at Stamford Bridge while Manchester City suffered their first defeat of the campaign against Bayer Leverkusen. The comprehensive victory saw Chelsea’s young talents outshine their Spanish opponents in a dominant display.

Chelsea’s Commanding Performance

In a clash between Premier League and La Liga contenders, Chelsea emerged as emphatic winners with goals from 18-year-old sensation Estevao and substitute Liam Delap. The breakthrough came through a Jules Kounde own goal in the first half, setting the stage for Chelsea’s dominance.

The match turned decisively when Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo received his second yellow card just before halftime, reducing the visitors to 10 men. Chelsea had already taken the lead through Kounde’s unfortunate deflection after Marc Cucurella’s cross caused chaos in Barcelona’s defense.

Teenage Talent Steals the Show

While much pre-match attention focused on both teams’ young stars, it was Chelsea’s Brazilian teenager Estevao who truly impressed. The 18-year-old produced a moment of magic, beating two defenders before firing into the roof of the net to extend Chelsea’s lead.

“I don’t really have any words to sum up how I’m feeling right now,” Estevao told Amazon Prime. “It really was the perfect night.”

Liam Delap sealed the victory in the 73rd minute, completing a miserable evening for Barcelona that leaves them in 15th position in the standings.

Guardiola’s Gamble Backfires

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola’s decision to rest key players proved costly as Manchester City fell 2-0 to Bayer Leverkusen. Erling Haaland, Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva and Gianluigi Donnarumma were all left out of the starting lineup at the Etihad.

“I take full responsibility,” Guardiola admitted. “I think the players that started were exceptional players but we missed something needed at the highest level.”

The defeat marks City’s second loss in four days, following their Premier League setback against Newcastle, though their knockout stage prospects remain intact.

Other Champions League Action

In other matches, Marseille came from behind to beat Newcastle 2-1 thanks to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s second-half double. Juventus snatched a dramatic 3-2 victory over Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt with Jonathan David scoring in injury time.

Borussia Dortmund moved up to fourth with a 4-0 win over 10-man Villarreal, while Napoli and Benfica both secured 2-0 victories against Qarabag and Ajax respectively.
