Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s India Visit: Key Details

Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella will visit India from December 10-12, meeting with top government leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to discuss the country’s AI transformation.

Key Takeaways

  • Three-day tour covering Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai
  • Meetings with PM Modi and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw
  • Focus on Microsoft’s AI infrastructure and skilling initiatives
  • Follows $3 billion investment announced in January 2024

Detailed Itinerary and Meetings

The India-born tech leader begins his tour in Delhi on December 10, moves to Bengaluru on December 11, and concludes in Mumbai on December 12. This marks another significant visit as Microsoft strengthens its position in India’s rapidly growing cloud and AI services market.

Microsoft’s Previous AI Commitments

During his January 2024 visit, Nadella announced a $3 billion investment for cloud and AI infrastructure development. He declared India was becoming a global AI innovation leader and emphasized Microsoft’s commitment to making the country “AI-first.”

The company pledged to train 10 million Indians in essential AI skills by 2030. Microsoft has already exceeded its 2025 target by training 2.4 million people within one year, with most participants from Tier-II and Tier-III cities and 65% being women.

Competitive Landscape

Rival Google has also committed $15 billion to establish a state-of-the-art AI hub in Visakhapatnam, highlighting the intense competition in India’s AI sector.

Pre-Visit Diplomatic Engagement

In preparation for Nadella’s visit, Commerce and Industries Minister Piyush Goyal met with Lisa Monaco, President of Microsoft Global Affairs, on Tuesday. Goyal posted on X that discussions centered on Microsoft’s continued engagement in India and support for AI-led innovation.

Both sides explored strengthening the India-US partnership in AI, digital trade, and workforce development to ensure inclusive and sustainable growth.
